You can run a full party of generics, or DLC characters, and the story won't change in the slightest.
There's no particular reason to use the "main" story characters, so don't feel like you have to, if you don't like them. It's nearly all just characters from past Disgaea games, or other NIS games, anyways. On the other hand, don't feel like you need to do the DLC/Special Content early the extra classes (Celestial Hostess, Shaman, and Kunoichi) are really good to pick up, since they're basically just an extension of the main game, but everything else is 100% optional, and you won't miss anything by just skipping it.
